Unless India agrees to open its military facilities to nuclear inspectors, sale of uranium by Australia to that country will be a breach of the federal government's obligations under the South Pacific Nuclear Free Zone Treaty. "Australia would be in breach of the so-called Rarotonga Treaty, if India does not change its stand," Donald Rothwell of Australian National University said. The Rarotonga Treaty bans uranium sales to most countries.

An Indian student was attacked and beaten till he fell unconscious by a gang in Melbourne's Central Business District in broad daylight. According to a news channel, Rajat Tyagi, a trainee pilot, was confronted as he left his apartment in Flinders Street on Sunday morning by five men. Tyagi, who hails from Delhi, said the gang surrounded him and beat him till he fell unconscious. Rajat hopes that the incident was captured on CCTV. He said he has heard no more from the police.

In a gruesome incident, a 24-year-old Indian student was raped, murdered and her body was stuffed inside a suitcase in Sydney last week. The suitcase was found by some construction workers near a canal. The victim was identified as Indian student Tosha Thakkar and the police are now waiting for the results of a post-mortem examination to determine exactly how she died. In yet another attack on an Indian student in Australia, a 31-year old cookery student was stabbed in the stomach by two men after he finished work in a South Yarra bar in Melbourne earlier in November.The student, who did not want to be named, underwent an emergency surgery and needed 26 stitches on his punctured bowel after the attack on November 5, according to a media report.
